There are so many separate pieces which, when put together, create something our brains understand. Even when we think we’ve grasped the whole, there are always details we miss. This is a portion of a mosaic wall in the cafe at the Currier Museum in Manchester, New Hampshire. At the time I took this image I never noticed the toes; my eyes were drawn, instead, to a general impression of color and texture. I missed the toes again when I edited this image after uploading it from my camera. The toes emerged only as I prepared this post. In the final drafts of a book there are always vital details that reveal themselves at the eleventh hour… just when I think there is nothing more to learn about my story.
