I started out writing a picture book about a girl in a city during a very hot, very dry summer.

Eileen Christelow, a member of my writing group, asked me why my character wanted rain so much.

I began thinking about times in history when people really wanted rain and before I knew it I was knee deep in research about the Dust Bowl.

Out of the Dust and Come On, Rain! (the picture book) were two stories grown from the same seed.
