Hey there! Thanks for dropping by karenhesseblog! Take a look around and grab the RSS feed to stay updated. See you around!
Though there have been discussions from time to time, my novels have never made it to film.
In this photo I’m wearing a scarf given to me as a gift by Karen Nelson Hoyle.
Don’t I look a bit like Rifka?
However… I am in the process for a youtube video! (It’s the amateur filmmaker from a while back, Christian) I found out for something as small as that, many people never needed permission. My goal here is to make the ‘movie’ and then contact Macmillan, or more specifically a representative of Henry Holt. If they watch it and enjoy it, perhaps issue me a small fine to pay (and I mean small, like under $500) then I will happily pay and upload to the site. However, If I’m not granted such permission for a price I can afford, I will disregard it all and upload anyway. This is because I believe that several pre-existing videos have already broken this ‘copyright infringement rule’ and still stayed because of the time and effort. I also believe it is a form of protest against their copyright laws, people misuse and mistreat them so often… this abuse is often ridiculously unfair. Several real-life examples demonstrate the success of this belief, take this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5G0j_Huv2Fg (These people actually contacted Pixar for fear of being taken down, however no one knows how successful they were) Vimeo and Dailymotion are also good ways to promote a video as well. This is my most ambitious project yet, I thank you for being such a kind and admirable person!
is that you on the left
Yes it is. The scarf was given to me by Karen Nelson Hoyle. This photo was a spoof gift for her on the occasion of her retirement.
this is kind of out of the subject but I really love the Out of the Dust. I wish it was a movie.:)
Thanks, Reagan. I’d love that too!
hi again I am one of the kids from Evans
by the way youre very pretty
Thank you. And you are very kind.
thank you 🙂
I remember reading the book Rifka in 4th grade in a book club and i loved it. Thank you for writing such wonderful books as Rifka and Out of the Dust.
Sorry, I meant Letters from Rifka
When will Lettters from Rifka starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz be released? I saw the movie trailer dated 2011 on YouTube.
Ha. Wouldn’t that be something!
That’s a bummer! 😦
Hi Karen! Do you know of any resources I could use to build background knowledge for my students before we read Letters from Rifka? I’ve scoured the internet for something written on a sixth grade level about how the Jews were treated after World War I. I want them to understand why Rifka’s family had to flee and why her brothers were being forced into the military. Your help is appreciated. Thank you!
Dear Rachel, please have a look at the Historical Note at the end of LETTERS FROM RIFKA. If you do not get enough information there I would suggest doing an on-line search using the word “pogrom” to find more for your students. Good luck and thank you for your interest. -Karen Hesse
can you make a movie out of the book out of the dust or add some series
Perhaps some day someone will make a movie from OUT OF THE DUST but no one has jumped at the opportunity yet. Thank you for wanting to keep the story going, Ariana.
