When organizing a book I find some stories flow easily in a continuous ribbon of prose. OUT OF THE DUST demanded to be handled in a less conventional manner; hence it is told in a cycle of poems and each dated poem helps the reader understand where he or she is in the novel’s journey. Every poem is a solitary building block in this book. I hope, by the end, the accumulation of poems creates a unified structure…one that is both made of dust and impervious to dust.
“Why did you write poems for each date?”
