Hello Karen Hesse — I’m editing the program for a concert to take place on Sunday with the premiere of Zae Munn’s opera on a text of yours. Could you please email me a one-paragraph bio for the program, if you feel inclined? Thanks a bundle.
“Karen Hesse has published twenty-four picture books, novels, and short stories over her twenty-one year career. Her work has been honored by the Christopher Medal (twice), the Newbery Medal, and the MacArthur “Genius” Award to name a few. When not writing Hesse makes and sells one-of-a-kind hand-knitted dolls to raise funds for Orphelinat Foyer Evangelique, a small orphanage in Haiti.”
Give Zae my best wishes and may the concert go brilliantly. -Karen
HI Mrs. Hesse, my daughter is doing an author study on you. She is a fourth grader in an academic magnet school and thoroughly enjoyed your book “Out of the Dust.” She has to find an actual book about you. Can you help us? We have only been able to locate internet sources so far.
Thank you for your comment, Cynthia. If you and your daughter check under the BOOKS tab on this site and scroll down to the bottom, you will find one book written about me (by Rosemary Oliphant-Ingham) and a couple of books in which I write about myself. There is also SOMETHING ABOUT THE AUTHOR volume 113 and SOMETHING ABOUT THE AUTHOR AUTOBIOGRAPHY SERIES volume 25 (this is the same material in two different volumes) in which I write more extensively about my life. I hope your daughter enjoys her author study. Best wishes, Karen Hesse
Hi Karen,
My students will be reading some of your books this year. Part of their “end of book project” is to write a letter to the author. I have a few who have stated that they would like to mail it to you. At what address do you receive fan mail? Thanks!
It’s always best to send the mail to: Scholastic, 557 Broadway, NY NY 10012. Scholastic is very good about forwarding my mail to me in an expeditious manner. And your letters are a wonderful signal to them that my books are still being read. Thank you for all you do and for including my work in your academic year. Best wishes, Karen Hesse
